For sure, you can publish wide by creating separate vendor accounts at Barnes & Noble, Apple Books, Google play and Kobo. That would save you from having to pay Draft2Digital a cut of your royalties. However for many people, the time the save by using one distributor is worth it. In addition, Draft2Digital gives you easy access to many other smaller vendors like Hoopla (libraries) and Tolino (Italy). For many people once they learn how to upload to Amazon KDP and Draft2Digital, they feel like then then enough experience to try uploading to Barnes & Noble, Apple, Google and Kobo separately. While Draft2Digital does offer Amazon as one of the places it publishes to, using Draft2Digital means you would never be able to enroll your book in Kindle Unlimited. And while this may be the right choice for you now, the marketplace and readership always changes. Personally, I think having the ability to adapt, test and having the option to enroll your book in Kindle Unlimited is not something to give up easily.
Amazon offers free ISBNS for print books, but ones that can only be used on Amazon. Other vendors and bookstores will require separate ISBNS, but many places like Draft2Digital will also give you a free ISBN. Spoiler alert though, it's the same deal as Amazon: any place that gives you a free ISBN will only allow you to use that ISBN at their storefront. If you hope to get your books into physical bookstores, you will most likely still have to go to Bowker to purchase your own ISBN.
Publishing on Amazon KDP involves real decisions — not just box-checking. The 90-minute session allows time for us to walk through each step without rushing, while I explain what your options mean so you can make informed choices about things like pricing, categories, and Kindle Unlimited.
