FAQ
For sure, you can publish wide by creating separate vendor accounts at Barnes & Noble, Apple Books, Google play and Kobo. That would save you from having to pay Draft2Digital a cut of your royalties. However for many people, the time the save by using one distributor is worth it. In addition, Draft2Digital gives you easy access to many other smaller vendors like Hoopla (libraries) and Tolino (Italy). For many people once they learn how to upload to Amazon KDP and Draft2Digital, they feel like then then enough experience to try uploading to Barnes & Noble, Apple, Google and Kobo separately. While Draft2Digital does offer Amazon as one of the places it publishes to, using Draft2Digital means you would never be able to enroll your book in Kindle Unlimited. And while this may be the right choice for you now, the marketplace and readership always changes. Personally, I think having the ability to adapt, test and having the option to enroll your book in Kindle Unlimited is not something to give up easily.
According to this article from Draft2Digital, they will provide you with free ISBNS, but "note that our ISBNs can only be used through our service, and cannot be reused or transferred to a vendor we do not support. For example, if you upload your book to D2D and opt for one of our free ISBNs, that identifier will be associated with your book for every vendor you distribute to through us. Once you take that book elsewhere, however (such as uploading your D2D-generated ePub or MOBI file to Amazon or some other Vendor), your ISBN won’t be going with you. You’ll get a vendor-assigned identifier, and if you want an ISBN you’ll have to register one unique to that version of the book."
